Aircraft Paint Scheme Techniques

Our new state-of-the-art paint facility offers the finest in exterior refurbishment, complete with computer-enhanced aircraft paint schemes design. From start to finish, we care about every plane and every client.

We have found through extensive research that Dupont Imron products provide the best possible finish and are the only products we use. Our expert painters, apply three full coats of Dupont Imron polyurethane, giving the aircraft the deepest most reflective finish possible.

Trim stripes are laser-generated and applied. Our decal work is painted or silk screened to ensure a top quality long lasting finish. Our technicians, according to service manuals, will reassemble the aircraft, rebalance all of the controls, replace all screws with stainless steel screws into panels, and, then, a licensed authority signs off logbooks, verifying the reassembly of the aircraft. The entire aircraft is then detailed and the windows are polished. Lastly, our experts will  conduct a post-refurbishment inspection on the aircraft to ensure quality.

All customers will receive:

  • a computer disk with pictures of the aircraft throughout
    the refurbishment process

  • a complete list of the materials used on their particular aircraft

  • paint care kit including touch up paint

  • a three-year paint warranty

At Edge Aircraft, we create a beautiful paint job from the ground up. When an aircraft arrives, a multi-point inspection will be conducted by one of our licensed mechanics. During the inspection process, we will determine repair and replacement of any of the aircraft's parts.

After the inspection is complete, all paper work will be filled out, copies signed and distributed. The design of the aircraft will be discussed at this time—this is your chance to put your own personal touch into the refurbishment of the aircraft paint schemes.

Understanding the complexity of the process, we have hired consultants to help you every step of the way, or for your convenience, the entire process can be handled by our designers.

Aircraft Stripping Facility
The aircraft then will be put into our stripping facility where all primary flight control surfaces as well as inspection panels are removed. The aircraft then will be prepared to strip, windows and windshield are masked with a multi-spec aluminum barrier shield and metal tape. The composite parts are prepared in a similar manner. The seams of the aircraft are sealed with metal tape to ensure that stripper does not enter into the seams of the airframe. Landing gear is masked with heavy plastics to protect the tires and wheel bearings during the stripping process.

Aircraft Stripping Process
The stripping process begins with a non-acidic organic chemical stripper, the very safest for your aircraft's sensitive skin. Stripper is applied and washed off of the aircraft with a powerful steam power washer. After the six hours of bodywork is completed, the areas around the windows, the seams and all of the composite parts are sanded and prepared. The aircraft is then washed by hand and a scotch bright material with etch/brightener is used to achieve the cleanest, possible surface.

Final Aircraft Paint Protection
Following the etch/brightener wash, a complete alodine conversion coat is applied. This process converts the metal to aluminum oxide, providing a corrosion protection barrier and promoting excellent adhesion. There is simply no substitute for a thorough alodine treatment in the life and adhesion of an aircraft paint job. A zinc chromate epoxy primer is then applied for additional corrosion protection and topcoat bonding. On flush riveted aircraft, three coats of polyurethane sanding surfacer are applied and sanded down to provide a smooth substrate for the topcoat application.
